Neglected boats and/or boats with outstanding debt at Preston Marina

Neglected boats and boats with outstanding debt at Preston Marina

.

These are the sorts of things that we don’t like to have to consider…but…

If you find yourself in a position where you are unable to keep your boat in good sea-worthy condition and /or are struggling to pay your marina fees then there are a few things you should know;

.

Firstly, please feel free to find and take your boat to a lower cost berthing/storage facility (once you have setteled your account with us.)  We make every effort to make Preston Marina a cost-effective and value for money berthing option for your boat but we recognise there may be other lower cost options potentially available that you might want to consider.

.

If you do choose to keep your boat at Preston Marina that’s great and we appreciate the business but please keep the boat in sound sea-worthy and clean condition.

.

Berthing and storage fees will continue to be charged to our contract holders while the boat in question remains at Preston Marina. If a berth-holders account falls into debt then we will take formal steps to recover the debt.

.

PLEASE NOTE – We are no longer accepting boats that have become neglected for our brokerage sales service. We will only accept well-presented boats that are, in our opinion, in commission and sea-worthy with a good documented history for brokerage sales.

.

We recently removed all charges from our tariff for private boat sales – you are free to sell your own boat without any charges from us (many marinas charge a fee for private boat sales).

.

These days there are more resources than ever available to help people sell their boats – if you, or someone you know and trust is a little bit tech-savvy then there are many websites where you can advertise your boat – including eBay which is often very effective. You might find that appointing a marine surveyor to do a valuation prior to putting the boat on the market may be helpful.

.

If you are selling your boat please make sure you or someone representing you accompanies all viewings and that the boat is safe to access and walk around (for example, clean uncluttered decks).

Please also note that if you do sell your boat berthing is not automatically transferable to your buyer or a new owner – the new owner must apply to continue to keep the boat here.

.

As an alternative to selling the boat yourself you are welcome to seek the services of a third-party professional yacht broker.

.

In summary, your options are;

.

1) Settle your account with us and take your boat to alternative berthing facility.

2) Sell the boat yourself – perhaps using sites like eBay, Apollo Duck, Boats and Outboards etc…(make sure the boat is safe to access and view – perhaps appoint a surveyor first for a valuation)

3) Enquiring with third-party professional yacht brokers to act on your behalf to sell the boat.

4) Make the boat in commission, sea-worthy and clean and we can consider placing the boat on our brokerage sales listing. Information here. (Please note, we do not employ shipwrights or boatyard staff who can re-commission boats on behalf of customers)

5) Make the boat seaworthy and enjoy boating! (the best option!)

6) If things are sadly beyond any of the above then you may have to consider scrapping your boat – if your boat is made of steel or aluminium there may be a positive scrap value – if fibreglass or wood you will need to pay for scrapping and landfill costs.
