RYA Sailing Courses

*

If you want to get started in crusing under sail our RYA Start Sailing courses are the perfect entry point.

.

Instead of using dinghies to teach the basics of sailing we use Jeanneau’s small crusing yachts – which are larger and more stable than dinghies and ideally suited for those whose ambitions are eventually towards sailing larger cruising yachts.

.

Basic overview….

Learn the basics of sailing within the sheltered waters of Preston dock.

2 day courses in our stable and comfortable Jeanneau sailing keelboats. 1 instructor and up to 3 students on board.

.

Keelboat Level 1 is an absolute beginners course – but by the end of it you will be able to (under supervision) control a sailing boat in all directions in light weather, as well as have a basic understanding of the parts of a sailing boat and how it works.

Keelboat Level 2 – takes what you have learned at Level 1 and expands upon it and gives sailing time to make you more independent of supervision and take charge of your own small sailing boat in good weather and sheltered waters. The RYA Sailing Level 2 qualification can often be sufficient proof of competence to be able to rent small sailing boats (dinghies etc.). You must pass the Level 1 course before being accepted on the Level 2 course.

..

These courses can be complemented with, for example the RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship Course (Online or Classroom) or RYA Day Skipper theory, and the RYA VHF Radio qualification to help you progress towards being the skipper of a cruising yacht.

.

Please note – these courses cannot run when the wind is above Force 3 (approx 8 – 12mph) or poor visability – so your course may be subject to cancellation (and refund) or postponement due to weather.

.

Minimum age 18 (12 if accompanied by a parent or guardian)

Each course (Level 1 and 2) is 2 days (16 hours)

.

PLEASE NOTE – These courses are NOT comparable or equivalent to the RYA Competent Crew,  Day Skipper or Yachtmaster practical courses or the International Certificate of Competence (I.C.C.). Such courses and qualifications are much more advanced and take place at sea, over around 40 hours each. Due to our location and the nature of our coastline it is not possible for us (or indeed anyone in our area) to offer RYA sea-going practical courses. The RYA Start Sailing Level 1 & 2 are purely a basic introduction to how to sail a boat and are a good starting point for people with no previous sailing experience.
